State participation will generate new privately funded educational resources for New Mexico’s K–12 students and families beginning in 2027

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Invest in Education applauds Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s decision for New Mexico to participate in the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program (FSTC). Her decision to participate ensures that tens of thousands of New Mexico’s students and families have the opportunity to benefit from the new federal program when it launches on January 1, 2027.

The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program allows eligible taxpayers to receive a 100 percent federal tax credit of up to $1,700 annually for charitable contributions to qualified nonprofit scholarship granting organizations (SGOs). Those organizations then award scholarships to eligible K-12 students in public and non-public schools to cover qualified educational expenses such as tutoring, special education services, extended day programs, educational technology, instructional materials, and more.

“Governor Lujan Grisham’s decision to opt New Mexico in to the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program unlocks millions of dollars in new scholarship opportunities for families throughout the state,” said Anne Lesser, President and CEO of Invest in Education. “The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit will increase affordability and access by bringing new privately funded scholarships to families to help meet the educational needs of their children. We commend Governor Lujan Grisham’s leadership and look forward to working with her administration, organizations, and education leaders across New Mexico as they prepare for 2027.”

With New Mexico’s decision, 32 states have announced participation in the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit program, opening the door for eligible K–12 students in public and non-public schools to benefit from scholarship resources beginning in 2027.

With the program’s launch approaching, Invest in Education continues to work with states, SGOs, schools, nonprofit organizations, families, and other stakeholders to provide information about the program and support implementation efforts.
